Mother’s Day in Nepal

Mothers are symbol of love, strength and sacrifice. As a culturally and traditionally rich country, Nepal celebrates Mother’s Day (Aamako Mukh Herne) on the month of Baishak marked on Baishakh Krishna Aunsi of the Nepali calendar, known as Matatirtha Aunsi.

On Mother’s Day people show their love and appreciation to their mother by spending time with her, cooking for her and buying her gifts. The children who live away from their mother come to visit her with gifts or sweets.

According to the legends, a shepherd boy in Nepal lost his mother and was so depressed. He went to Mata Tirtha pond and suddenly he saw his mother’s face in the water.  From that day on, this day was known as Mata Tirtha Aunsi, the Nepali Mother’s day. People believe that coming to this place and worshiping on this day brings peace to the departed soul of their mother.

Specially Newa people give Saga, a ritual prayer with gifts to their mothers and see her face on this day. Newly wed bride are sent to their mother’s home with Nhu ku, varieties of sweets and fruits.
